Saoirse picket at Belfast GPO

The campaign for the release of republican prisoners took another step forward this week when Saoirse staged an impressive picket outside the Belfast GPO on Wedneday 10 September.

Saoirse Belfast Chair Phil McCullough said he was delighted with the turnout and Saoirse presence in the city centre.

``The reason for a city centre protest is to contradict the air of normality which the British Government have tried to portray since the cessation. There is no normality, and our effort here portrays that fact. While we have republican prisoners we have no normality.''

McCullough confirmed the importance of the Saoirse campaign for nationalists. ```Getting out of the ghettoes' is important to emphasise that there is still difficulties in the north of Ireland.''
