Wreaths laid where Volunteers fell

A very touching commemoration was held on Tuesday 26 August in Drogheda to mark the 75th anniversary of the death of Liam Leech, Patrick Cooney, Bernard Daly, Tim Flanagan and Patrick O'Mainin.

Local people assembled on the Pitcher Hill steps (off the Bull Ring) at the spot were Liam Leech was shot. A wreath was laid by Maureen O'Neill and a decade of the Rosary (as Gaeilge) was said.

Maeve Healy, Sinn Féin, spoke of the sacrifice of these men and their comrades. She spelled out the need for the people of this generation to see that the cause for which these men gave their lives - that of freedom and justice to the Irish people in a 32 County Ireland - is fulfilled.

She said: ``It is now more necessary than ever that we all work harder to promote the peace process, to strive to achieve freedom and equality for all of Ireland and all in Ireland''.

A further wreath was laid at the Old Hill, by Nuala Early at the spot were Captain Daly was shot. The assembly then proceeded to St. Mary's Cemetery where wreaths were laid to the memory of all those killed from Drogheda, at the grave of Bernard Daly.
