Support for plastic bullet ban
Two relatives of young children murdered by British soldiers, who
afterwards were given immunity from prosecution, have concluded a
three-day visit to England in which they lobbied Labour MPs and
trade unionists and generally highlighted British violence in the
Six Counties.
Mr Jimmy Barrett from Ardoyne in Belfast whose son, Danny aged
11, was shot dead by a British soldier with a lead bullet last
year and Mrs Rhona Toland, aunt of 11-year-old Derry boy Stephen
McConomy, who was murdered in April this year by a British army
plastic bullet, were sponsored by the `Silent Too Long' group.
They were met with widespread interest and sympathy. Mr Barret,
on his return, said:
``People in England are kept in the dark about what is going on in
the North. When we showed them a plastic bullet many people were
shocked as they were under the impression that it was an
ordinary-sized bullet only made of soft plastic.''
