Forkhill Winter School

With the bicentennial of the United Irish rebellion upon us and numerous events being organised for the `year of liberty, 98' it is heartening to note this weekends bilingual winter school Scoil Sliabh gCuillinn in rebel South Armagh. Entitled `Aontas Intinne?-1798-A Union of Wills'? the school will be opened and addressed by Dr Martin Mansergh on Friday evening 7 November at 8.00pm.

Mansergh, personal advisor to Dublin government leader Bertie Ahern, will speak on the theme: `The Rights of Man in Ireland; The Ideals of 1798'. Following this will be a singing and music session, led by renowned singer, broadcaster and song collector Frank Harte who begins with the challenge, `Who fears to sing of `98?

Also taking part are Ulster Unionist Chris McGimpsey, former SDLP councillor Brian Feeny, John Gray of the Linenhall Library, Anna Kinsella, historian from Wexford and Dr Tom Bartlett, professor of modern history in UCD, all interwoven with music from sean nos singers, fiddlers and pipers backed up by an impressive cast of local traditional singers.
