Irish Centre stand-off
By Peadar Whelan
SIX MEMBERS OF THE Liverpool Irish Centre co-operative which has
been closed by receivers acting on behalf of Scottish Courage
brewery have spent the last week on the roof of the building as
part of a peaceful protest against the closure.
The six say they will stay on the roof until the future of the
centre is secured.
Sheila Coleman, chairperson of the co-operative, has called on
the receivers to remove a ``security firm'' which is at present
occupying the building and to allow the co-op staff and
management back in to run the centre.
Coleman accused the receivers of wanting the centre closed as a
co-op so that they could sell it into private hands, a move that
would ensure the importance of the centre as a community centre
would be gone.
The rooftop protesters are calling on people to boycott McEwans
lager, which is owned by Scottish Courage. They also called on
community, trade union and political bodies to contribute ``in any
way they can to our struggle to secure our community's future''.
