Service charges victory

Sinn Féin economics spokesperson and Ard Chomhairle member Councillor Caoimhghín O Caoilain welcomed this week the decision by the coalition to abolish water charges.

He said ``Sinn Féin activists and councillors had consistently campaigned against the charges since their introduction in 1983, and it was good to see their persistence rewarded.

``It is still unclear as to what the final details of the new proposals would be and whether the coalition have taken the first step towards a truly equitable local tax system. The decision to pursue non-payers through the courts is unfortunate and I believe will prove inefficient and unproductive for the coalition to implement.

``I want to commend Sinn Féin councillors throughout the 26 Counties who have fought the case against the imposition of service charges in council chambers across the state''.
