IRA attacks RUC in Derry

Derry Brigade IRA has claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on an RUC patrol in the Galliagh area of Derry on Tuesday evening 7 January.

Two RUC vehicles, travelling along the Templemore Road at around 9pm, were the target of the attack but both escaped damage. The British Army moved into the area 12 hours later and began a huge follow up operation.

The RUC ordered householders out of their homes in the Collon Lane estate. Anyone who refused was told they would be placed under house arrest and not allowed to go to the shops, collect children from school or get back into their homes if they left. However, residents of a private housing estate closer to the ``suspicious object'' were allowed to remain in their homes.

Sinn Fein's Gerry O' hEara said, ``for 12 hours people were walking about here, yet within minutes of the RUC re-emerging from their bunkers they were telling everyone to evacuate the area around the Collon Lane housing estate.''
