RUC criminalises Garvaghy residents
By Mick Naughton.
Residents of Garvaghy Road have accused the RUC of a ``systematic campaign of harassment'' against them. Spokesperson Brendan MacCionnaith said 18 people have been arrested and questioned in connection with the protest on the Garvaghy Road when the RUC forced an Orange march along the road on 11 July. One of those arrested was not even in the country on that date.
Of the four cases heard so far, all have resulted in acquittals, and residents are angry at the RUC's attempts to ``criminalise'' their protest.
A Lurgan solicitor confirmed that over 60 people intend taking legal action against the RUC over events on 11 July.
Mac Cionnaith said that the RUC were leaking untrue stories to the press, using special powers legislation to arrest people for minor incidents and more sinister, drawing attention to Catholic workers by visiting them in their workplaces in loyalist areas when the RUC already had their home addresses.
