Loyalists attack Sinn Féin activist
By Martha McClelland
JUST BEFORE 1PM ON SATURDAY 28 December Derry Sinn Fein activist Liam Duffy went to his car parked outside his home in the Gobnascale area. Under the front door of the vehicle he spotted a bomb. Duffy immediately alerted other republicans in the area and a neighbour rang the RUC.
Duffy had not used his car since Christmas Day and the device, which had been attached to its underside by magnets, may have been there since then.
No group has admitted carrying out the attack although speculation has it that the UDA recently received a consignment of the high explosive Powergel and were behind the attack.
Duffy, who is a former POW, said that a week after he discovered the bomb an anonymous caller phoned his workplace and warned, ``we missed Duffy and we'll get him the next time''.
Sinn Féin constituency representative for the area, Lynn Fleming, said, ``it took the RUC over an hour to arrive. Local republicans had to seal off the area to ensure the safety of residents''.
Fleming called on nationalists to be ``especially vigilant''.
