Republicans arrested

On Monday 6 January, seven men with republican connections were arrested in Dublin and detained until late on Tuesday night. Gardai briefed the media that they were being held for questioning on the killing of drug dealer PJ Judge on 8 December last. However, the catch-all trawl suggested the Gardai were merely engaged in an exercise of `rounding up the usual suspects'. There have been several attempts in the media in the past year to suggest the IRA were targeting Dublin drug dealers.

Drugs activists bailed again

Noelie Kirwan and Donal Fennelly, members of north inner city drugs campaigns, were remanded on continuing bail for eight weeks on Tuesday 7 January. The two men are facing charges they strongly deny for alleged `drug vigilantism'.

At their last court appearance the judge warned that the case would be struck out if the state failed to produce the book of evidence by the Tuesday session, but despite this failure, a further delay was again granted to the prosecution to 3 March.
