Branch harass Cork republicans

Garda Special Branch have once again targeted Cork republicans for harassment. Clonakilty Sinn Féin Councillor Cionnaith O Súilleabháin and three Sinn Féin members from Cork City - James McBarron, Tomas McCormack and Kieran Hegarty - were held and verbally abused as they stood at Sean Sabhat's graveside following the annual Sean Sabhat commemoration in Limerick City on Sunday 5 January.

O Súilleabháin was asked by two different Branchmen for his name. One of them wrote it as ``Jerry O Sullivan'' and later accused O Súilleabháin of giving a false name. The four men were threatened with arrest.

Twelve carloads of Branchmen monitored the commemoration and those attending were filmed with video and still cameras.

O Súilleabháin said, ``It makes a mockery of democracy when people cannot assemble in a dignified manner to remember an Irish patriot without having to be subject to this type of surveillance, harassment and intimidation.''
