Councillor demands urgent fire safety review

Cork City Sinn Féin councillor Jonathan O'Brien has called for an urgent review of all fire safety procedures in Cork Corporation housing estates.

O'Brien said: ``The fire tragedy which took place in ArdCullen Estate, Hollyhill, Cork at the weekend underlines the necessity of carrying out an urgent review of all the fire safety precautions in housing owned by Cork Corporation.

``It is clear that the houses in ArdCullen Estate are not readily acessible to the fire brigade and a new hydrant is needed. The question now arises as to how many other estates are in the same situation.

``I have already asked the city manager to explain at the next Monday's Cork Corporation meeting why the new fire station on the North Link Road is not yet operational, despite being officially opened in April.

``I will now also be asking him if he will rectify the situation in ArdCullen Estate urgently and check other corporation housing to endure that this situation does not reoccur.

We cannot bring back this young boy's life, but let us try and ensure that such a tragedy is not visited on another family.''
