Forgotten Ten to be moved

The remains of Kevin Barry and nine other men executed by the British during the Tan War in Dublin's Mountjoy Jail and interred in the prison yard are at last to be exhumed and moved to the Republican Plot in Glasnevin cemetery.

Speaking at a ceremony at the prison to mark the 80th anniversary of Kevin Barry's execution, 26-County Justice minister John O'Donoghue announced that the families of the fallen republicans would shortly be receiving the necessary documents to allow the request for exhumation to proceed.

The decision is a success for the National Graves Association, which has campaigned tirelessly over many years to have the Forgotten Ten moved.

Sinn Féin spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh, introducing a motion calling for the exhumation at the party's Ard Fheis earlier this year, pointed out that these ten men had been held behind bars, had been executed behind bars, and were buried there also. He said it was an insult to their memory that almost 80 years on, they still remained behind bars, where their British excutioners had buried them.
