Greater Clonard ex-prisoners group to hold reunion

The recently formed Greater Clonard Ex-Prisoners group is to hold its first reunion in the Sean Mac Diarmada GAC club on Belfast's Falls Road on Friday, 24 March.

During the day, an exhibition at the club will include an array of photos charting the history of the area over the years as well as handicrafts made in the prisons and items of interest from the area.

High on the group's agenda is to build a memorial garden to the dead from the area. Said Sean Murray, PRO for the group: ``We commemorate our dead every year around this time and we hold our commemoration ceremony at Milltown, but now we want to build a tribute to the dead from our area in the district. We want it to become a focal point for the families and friends of our dead comrades and the many civilians who have died at the hands of the British over the years.''

``There are over 150 former prisoners signed up to our group,'' said Allen. ``But we know that there are many others out there. We want them to get in touch with us. We are also inviting everyone to come along to the exhibition and the reunion.
