Springfield Road Attack
A 14 year old Protestant boy was slightly injured by gunfire at
the Lanark Way interface on the Springfield Road last Sunday,
after a night of rioting following the RUC actions on the
Garvaghy Road. Residents spent Sunday evening anticipating a
Loyalist attack, and this perception proved correct.
After some hours of stone-throwing, residents watched as
Loyalists from the Shankill Road forced open a Lanark Way
security gate in order to secure easy access to the area.
RUC/British Army force appeared in the early hours of Monday
morning, and sat on the Springfield Road watching Loyalists hurl
bottles and bricks at residents.
Residents frustrated at the RUC/British Army tolerating the
Loyalist activity attacked the crown forces.
Eventually the RUC withdrew, leaving the area open to possible
Loyalist attack. As Loyalists again attempted to gain access to
the Springfield at 3am the Protestant youth was injured by a
warning burst of gunfire. Residents remain cautious over further
possible Loyalist attacks.
