Murdered drivers remembered

By Joe Delaney

The eight West and North Belfast taxi drivers murdered over the past 20 years were remembered in a plaque unveiling ceremony on Sunday 9 February.

The plaque at the Castle Street Taxi rank is dedicated to Michael Duggan, Jim Green, Harry Muldoon, Patrick McAllister, Caoimhin MacBradaigh, Thomas Hughes, Hugh Magee and Padraig O Cleirigh.

The plaque was unveiled by Gerry Adams after a Mass at St Mary's chapel, Chapel Lane which was attended by several hundred people including, West Belfast Taxi Association chairman Jim Neeson, Black Taxi drivers and their families.

Adams commended all Black Taxi drivers, past and present for their service to the community and said the drivers killed ``had died because the British Government labelled our community as a terrorist, barbarian and savage community. This of course is not true. We who come from this community know, that it is a law abiding community, a peaceful, good-humoured, dignified community and a community which seeks equality for all its citizens. On this very special day, let us pay tribute to the women and the men who drive black taxis, but let us also remember those who have died and their families who still grieve for them.''

Jim Green's name is currently not on the memorial but will be added in the future.
